What is OSHA?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is part of the United States Department of Labor. It sets and enforces workplace safety and health standards within its jurisdiction and supports training, outreach, education, and assistance.

Does OSHA apply outside the United States?

Safety professionals may consult OSHA resources when developing workplace safety practices. OSHA is not a worldwide regulator, and following its guidance does not establish compliance with another country’s laws. Organizations must identify the laws, regulators, and requirements that apply to their own locations and activities.

What should workplace safety training cover?

Training needs depend on the work being performed and the hazards present. Topics may include:

Hazard identification and chemical handling
Personal protective equipment
Emergency procedures and workplace inspections
Incident reporting and job-specific responsibilities

How do training needs vary by industry?

Oil and gas, manufacturing, and construction operations may need training relevant to confined spaces, hot work, equipment, and process hazards. Hospitality teams may need guidance on slips, cleaning chemicals, kitchen hazards, and manual handling. Healthcare teams may need training addressing biological exposure, sharps, and other workplace hazards.

A general awareness course does not replace a site-specific assessment or required task-specific training.

Is OSHA Outreach training a certification?

OSHA states that its Outreach Training Program courses are not certifications. An OSHA Outreach card is not a professional license, and Outreach training does not replace training required by specific OSHA standards. Before enrolling, confirm the provider, program, eligibility, assessment, and document issued on completion.
